So there you have it, the full list of Dixit expansion packs available on the market.
The ranking above is based on my personal preferences, and you may disagree. To help you make the best choice, I’ve included below more details on each, with pictures of the best Dixit expansion cards included in each box.
Overall, all of the expansions are similar: they all contain 84 new cards. What differs is the artwork, that’s it.
Dixit Anniversary
Let’s start things up with the first expansion on the list, that I consider to be the best overall: Dixit Anniversary.
Released in 2018, 10 years after the initial release of Dixit, it contains artwork from all the artists that worked on the 8 previous expansions.
This is why I’ve picked it as the best overall, as it’s a perfect pick for the first expansion to buy after the base game.
If there’s any expansion in the list below that catch your eye, then go for it.
But if you’re not sure which one would be the best for you, then Dixit Anniversary is definitely the right pick, combining the style of all the others into 1 expansion.
Dixit Revelations
Ok you’ve seen my safe pick, for a first expansion.
But if I had to pick only one? Then it would be Dixit Revelations, hands down.
Unlike the other expansions, this one has a strong theme, focused on ancient myths, and what feels like Ancient Greece.
I feel like the cards from this set are the most beautiful of all the expansions, but this is just personal taste.
The cards have a lot of details, but each one looks very specific, which makes it harder to give targeted clues.
Dixit Mirrors
If you’re looking to add some fun to your Dixit plays, then look no further than Dixit Mirrors.
The artwork feels more cartoony than in the other packs, with more characters, and there seems like to be a common thread around telling funny stories through the cards.
I would admit that it’s harder to give abstract clues based on these cards, as they are very specific, and mostly based on people in funny situations.
So while it would not be my first pick, it’s definitely a good choice to bring some fun on the table, and to drive conversations around the cards themselves.
Dixit Memories
Dixit Memories is the best Dixit game expansion if you’re planning to play with kids.
The cards are really colorful, cheerful, and the characters are all so cute!
Out of all the expansions available for Dixit, this is the one I pick when there are kids around the table.
They can always relate to the charming characters in the cards, and the artwork always seem to spark the imagination of the younger players.
Even for adults, you’ll find that the cards have a lot of details, and there’s a lot happening in each, making it easy to give abstract clues that are not so easy to find.
Dixit Harmonies
Just like the previous one was the perfect pick for kids, this one is perfect for older players up for a challenge.
You thought the cards in Dixit were abstract? Well, the ones in Dixit Harmonies are even more abstract!
There’s no strong contrast in the cards, they rely mostly on a few primary colors, and there’s a lot less strong figures standing out as they feel more part of the scene.
Playing with the cards from this set, you won’t be able to rely on one part of the card for your clues. Rather, you’ll need to describe cards as a whole, and this often leads to clues based on situations or feelings.
I find it to be the most challenging version of Dixit, all expansions included. Perfect for the older crowd, to go deeper in the experience.
Dixit Journey
Next up on the list is the 2nd Dixit expansion released, after Dixit Quest.
But it’s the first one that features a different artist, Xavier Collette, who then went on to illustrate other great games (Mysterium, Obscurio and Abyss, to name a few).
Dixit Journey feels very different, and it’s for me the best expansion for creativity.
The cards all have a lot of details, perfect for picking abstract clues. They also represent complete scenes, that will often be the basis for a full story in your mind, and will inspire you to give longer clues than just one word.
Dixit Odyssey
If you absolutely loved the artwork in the original Dixit game, then you’ll love Dixit Odyssey.
It’s illustrated by a new artist, but colored by the same artist as the base game, Marie Cardouat. You’ll find the same feel as the cards from Dixit, and it’s a great, safe pick to extend the replayability with 84 new cards.
It’s important to note that Dixit Odyssey was initially released as a standalone game in 2011, that came complete with a new improved score board, a total of 12 rabbit tokens to extend the game up to 12 players, and a new voting system with individual voting boards.
This version seems to be still available in Europe, but it’s sold only as an expansion pack in the US, with only the 84 cards just like any other expansion.
Dixit Origins
Out of all the Dixit extra cards packs, Dixit Origins is the second with a clearly defined theme, after Dixit Revelations.
In this one, all of the illustrated cards could be seen in a fables book. They feature heroes – some humans, some animals, some other monsters – deep in their stories.
The characters give a creepy, menacing vibe, so this may not be ideal for children.
Overall the cards are rich, full of details, and they make for interesting clues.
Dixit Quest
Dixit Quest is the first ever Dixit expansion released, 2 years after the base game.
It’s illustrated by Marie Cardouat, the same artist as the initial game. Cards are very similar to the previous ones, that you could just mix them with the base game without any issue.
This expansion is a safe pick if you liked the cards in the base game, as it’s pretty much more of the same.
In light of all of the other cards sets available, that all bring different artworks and themes, this one would probably be my last pick if I had to buy the expansions again today.
Dixit Daydreams
And finally, the last Dixit expansion review on our list, Dixit Daydreams.
The reason I placed it last on this list is because the overall theme is so gloomy. Compared to all of the other cards, which are rather colorful, cheerful, sometimes cute, the cards in this set really stand out by their morose vibe.
Don’t get me wrong: I love the artwork. Some of the cards in this set are among the most beautiful ones ever, in their own special way.
But overall, I feel like each card is so unique, with a lack of fine details to use for clues, and the dark gloomy theme makes it the last pick for me.
Want Even More?
Truth is, you could play Dixit with any set of illustrated cards!
Take a look at these other board games like Dixit, you can use the cards from most of them to play Dixit with.
Can You Mix Dixit Expansions?
Yes, absolutely! You can use cards from any of the Dixit expansions to play a game.
Feel free to mix and match cards from any expansion to make for an interesting play.
How Many Dixit Expansions Are There?
There are 10 Dixit Expansions. Each one of them is made of 84 new cards, so in total there are 924 unique Dixit cards if you count the one from the base game.
What Is The Order Of The Dixit Expansions?
Here’s all the Dixit expansions, listed in order of release date, from oldest to most recent:
- Dixit (2008)
- Dixit Quest (2010)
- Dixit Odyssey (2011)
- Dixit Journey (2012)
- Dixit Origins (2013)
- Dixit Daydreams (2014)
- Dixit Memories (2015)
- Dixit Revelations (2016)
- Dixit Harmonies (2017)
- Dixit Anniversary (2018)
- Dixit Mirrors (2020)
What Was Dixit First Expansion?
The first Dixit expansion to be released was Dixit Quest, released in 2010, 2 years after the release of the initial base game.
Can You Play Dixit With Just The Expansion Pack?
Yes, you could. But you will need to use some paper and pencil to create your own voting tokens, and to keep track of the scores.
For the low price of the base game, I would still recommend getting Dixit, as the components make for an overall more enjoyable experience.
